A Typical Afternoon Program

This is what a typical day's program looks like at the Little Explorers Nature School!

Arrival:

– 1:00pm

The children meet in the basement where they are free to look at books and explore as they await the arrival of the other children. This floor has been renovated to allow ample natural light and an attractive space for the children’s activities.

Welcome Circle:

This is an opportunity for everyone to connect and to share thoughts and ideas. Afterwards every child will be invited to join a short time of prayer.  It is amazing how happy children are if they can pray for friends and people and animals around the world, something I have experienced many times as a teacher. Children want to help others and praying for them gives them the opportunity to do so.I will then introduce the daily theme through things like stories and music and engage the children in every aspect of our time together such as when planning how the afternoon will look.

Montessori Activities:

– indoors

The Montessori activities will be linked to the daily theme and focus on numbers, letters, shapes, and sign language. This will at times be serious, or playful, or artistic, and will involve physical movement, exploration, and sensory experiences.

Snack Brake:

– snacks provided by each family

The group will gather to wash hands, pray, enjoy their food and converse with each other. This is a wonderful opportunity for sharing stories and knowledge while building relationships and a sense of community.

Outdoor Activities:

We will do outdoor activities on our acreage, in the playhouse or in the forest behind our acreage. Sometimes we will go on the fields close to our acreage.

Outdoor themes will be about topics such as plants, weather, animals, navigation or basic first aid. These activities will also include playful, artistic, serious and/or challenging explorations with lots of physical movement and sensory experiences, alone or as a team. We will take advantage of unplanned learning opportunities as well such as a hawk flying overhead, a beetle crossing our path, or new life emerging from the forest floor.

If the weather conditions are bad or too many mosquitos or wasps are around we will be indoors.

Pick-up:

– 3:55pm to 4:00pm

Pick-up time from the playhouse area.
